1.10 Form personal responses to independently read texts, supported by evidence
Student instructions
Your independent reading this year may be on a range of topics and across a range of text types. This assessment activity requires you to form personal responses to at least six independently read texts, sharing what you felt about them and providing evidence to support your responses.
Guidelines and Conditions of Assessment
RESUBMISSIONS
After each individual response has received a grade and feedback you will have two weeks to resubmit. You will not have access to class time to do this but you may work on it at home or attend the weekly English tutorial. If responses are oral the resubmission is to take the form of conferencing with/questioning by your teacher immediately after.
DEADLINES
You will complete two personal responses a term with the final deadline being Friday, Week 7, Term 3.
Once each individual response is complete (and the resubmission period has passed) that grade is final (you may not re-vist/re-work the piece).
Missed deadlines:
If you misses a deadline for an individual response and do not have a valid reason you will then be withdrawn from the standard. However, you will still have to complete the remaining responses and these will be assessed at Level 5, contributing to your reading grade for the year.
You may approach your teacher prior to the deadline if you require an extension but this will be at their discretion. Any extensions asked for after the deadline will need to be approved by Mr McGilchrist.
Your personal response to each text.
In your response(s), you need to share your personal response to your text(s) and explain which parts of the text(s) made you feel that way.
A convincing and perceptive response will express your viewpoint in a reasoned way, with relevant supporting material from the text. Insights could be offered by:

Your independent reading this year may be on a range of topics and across a range of text types. This assessment activity requires you to form personal responses to at least six independently read texts, sharing what you felt about them and providing evidence to support your responses.
- Your responses can be presented in written and/or oral forms.
- You must include at least four written texts, two of which must be extended or long texts (such as novels or biographies).
- The other two texts can be visual, oral, or written.
- All written texts must be selected and read by you.
- You will be assessed on:
- your ability to make a personal response to at least six independently read texts
- your ability to select appropriate evidence for your responses. As part of your supporting evidence, each response must include at least two references (quotations or specific details) to the text.
- The texts need to be complex enough for Year 11 English. Get each text approved by your teacher prior to reading. If you are using a visual text, it needs to have an appropriate rating (i.e., you cannot hand in a response on an R16 film if you are only 15).

A convincing and perceptive response will express your viewpoint in a reasoned way, with relevant supporting material from the text. Insights could be offered by:
- discussing how and/or why the text has affected your ideas or views
- discussing how the text made you think about connections with your own life, the world, or other texts.
